✈️ The 1-3-1 Rule For Disrupted Flights
Reader’s Digest recently published an article on the “1-3-1” rule from Going founder Scott Keyes (or, as Clark would say, formerly Scott’s Cheap Flights).
The 1-3-1 rule applies to any disrupted flights.
“It’s a handy all-of-the-above approach to maximize your chances of getting a good replacement flight,” Keyes said.
1: Stay Informed. Use apps such as FlightAware or Flighty to get real-time updated on delays and gate changes.
3: Customer Service Triple Down. Getting help at the counter is first-come, first-served. So try to get in line before anyone else. Don’t wait, though. Call the customer service phone number immediately – and contact the airline via its chatbot or social media channels on your phone. See which one you can get through to first.
1: Hold Airlines Accountable. The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard lays out the legal obligations airlines have to you as a result of disruptions. You may be legally entitled to cash refunds, food vouchers and hotel accommodations – or for carriers to rebook you at no extra cost. Know the rules.
“Nearly every time I’ve had a flight disrupted, I’ve been able to get a decent replacement flight – no days-long waits – through an airline’s mobile app or by quickly getting in touch with an agent,” Keyes said.
