🍎 Amazon vs. Grocery Industry
Amazon didn’t exactly trigger a historic Black Monday market crash on Aug. 13.
But Amazon announced it will offer same-day delivery on perishable groceries across the United States. And stock prices at DoorDash, Instacart, Walmart, Albertsons and Kroger all slid.
Prime members can get free same-day grocery delivery in more than 1,000 U.S. cities (with plans to reach nearly 2,300 this year).
Amazon also undercut all the other services by offering the lowest free delivery minimum at $25. Albertsons offers a $30 minimum and everyone else notable offers a minimum of $35 or more. (Amazon charges a delivery fee of $2.99 for same-day perishable grocery deliveries under the minimum. Customers who aren’t Prime members must pay $12.99.)
But the biggest factor is convenience. Customers can add perishables such as meat and dairy to their Amazon carts and receive it the same day.
Amazon’s biggest incursion on the grocery sector probably came during its acquisition of Whole Foods.
