Another day, another Amazon attempt to gain market share in American groceries.

Amazon launched a new private-label grocery brand, Amazon Grocery, last week. The headline is that most of the more than 1,000 products are less than $5.

Not quite the dollar store. But the new brand includes dairy, produce, meat, seafood, snacks, baking essentials and more. Amazon says it is targeting price-conscious consumers.

Wall Street saw Albertsons, Walmart, Kroger, Costco and Target fall 1-3% on the day of the announcement.

Amazon launched a similar budget-friendly grocery brand (“Amazon Saver”) in September 2024.

Walmart commands more than one-fifth of the U.S. grocery market, followed by Kroger and Costco (less than 10% each).
