💵 Europe Ratchets Up Fines on Foreign Tourists

Europe’s crusade against overtourism and the unwanted side effects continues, this time with even greater fines.

Some of the most popular spots are looking to penalize foreign travelers for sometimes-benign behaviors.

“Popular tourist destinations in European cities are combating mass tourism by slapping some ridiculous, costly fines – some rising into the thousands – on visitors they deem unruly,” the New York Post wrote.

  • Wearing flip-flops while driving (up to $349 in Spain, Greece, Italy, France and Portugal).

  • Taking a seashell or pebble ($1,165 in Greece).

  • Wearing a bathing suit off the beach (fines up to $1,747 in Barcelona, Albufeira, Split, Sorrento, Cannes and Venice).

  • Drinking alcohol on the street (up to $3,495 in Mallorca, Ibiza, Magaluf and the Canary Islands).

  • Leaving your towel to claim a pool chair for too long (up to $291 in Spain).

  • Swimming in a canal ($407 in Venice).

Here are some of the other rules and regulations in Europe that the article mentions:

  • Unbuckling your seatbelt before your plane stops taxiing, cooking, camping, dressing in a less-than-tasteful manner, loitering, making excessive noise, and riding scooters recklessly.

It’s a good reminder to research international laws and customs before you travel outside of the United States.
