💸 Best, Worst States for Taxes

Yes, taxes are necessary. But it can be painful watching your hard-earned dollars go to the government.

At the federal level, we’re all paying the same taxes. But at the state level, there’s a wide range of tax rates.

The Tax Foundation released its 2025 State Tax Competitive Index to give us an idea of the states with the best and worst tax systems right now. It ranks all 50 states for:

  • Corporate taxes

  • Individual income taxes

  • Sales taxes

  • Property taxes

  • Unemployment insurance taxes

Here are the five best states to live in from a pure tax standpoint:

  1. Wyoming

  2. South Dakota

  3. Alaska

  4. Florida

  5. Montana

And here are the five worst states and territories to live in from a pure tax standpoint:

50. New York
49. New Jersey

T48. Washington D.C.
47. Connecticut

🐻 ~$142,000: The amount of money that four Los Angeles residents bilked from three insurance companies, claiming a bear damaged their vehicles. They got charged with insurance fraud after sending a video of a bear moving inside a Rolls-Royce and two Mercedes. A local biologist concluded it was “clearly a human in a bear suit” and a search warrant revealed a bear costume at the suspects’ home.
