🤖 Robotaxi Sends Police After Misbehaving Teens

Autonomous vehicles sit at the nexus of vehicle safety, automation and AI.

But a recent … mishap? … opened a new line of discussion.

A driverless Waymo robotaxi – ubiquitous for its external spinning cameras – monitors its passengers.

Remote Waymo operators caught two teenagers, via cameras on the interior of the car, allegedly drinking alcohol and shooting “water beads from a toy gun” in San Mateo, California. (Another story described it as an Orbeez gun, “a widely available toy that fires water-filled pellets.”)

The Waymo staff, however, could not distinguish that the guns were toys.

Concerned, Waymo called 911 and notified police. It also remotely disabled the vehicle. To avoid suspicion from the teenagers, Waymo told the passengers the vehicle was experiencing mechanical trouble.

Police arrived, removed the passengers – a 14- and 15-year-old – and searched the vehicle and their property.

Police soon realized the teens were shooting a toy gun, not a real weapon.

The teenagers weren’t arrested and got released to their parents. The police even pointed out that they “made the smart choice to use a ride-hailing service rather than driving while impaired,” one report said.

The district attorney’s office may be reviewing a possible open-container violation and also are investigating whether any other charges are appropriate.

But it’s an interesting development in terms of our transportation experience. You can now be monitored remotely in an autonomous taxi – and you can even have the police sent after you, in theory.
