Americans bought 16.4 million vehicles in 2025.
According to an F&I tools report, no automaker sold more than GM at nearly 3 million, including almost 750,000 in Q2.
Here’s the list of the top 10 best-selling automakers in the United States last year, rounded to the nearest hundred thousand:
GM: 2.9 million
Toyota: 2.5 million
Ford: 2.2 million
Hyundai/Kia: 1.8 million
Honda: 1.4 million
Stellantis: 1.3 million
Nissan: 900K
Subaru: 600K
Tesla: 600K
VW: 600K
Just missed: BMW, Mazda, Mercedes, Volvo, Mitsubishi, JLR.
Visual Capitalist noted that Japanese, South Korean, German, British and Swedish automakers all hold varying levels of penetration in the U.S. market. But that’s not the case for China.
BYD, Geely and Great Wall Motors “have proven incredibly successful worldwide,” but “sweeping U.S. tariffs on these manufacturers have blocked them from the lucrative American market.”
