⏱ How To Find Out How Long You’ll Wait at the Airport TSA Security Line
Depending on what airport you fly through, the day and time of your flight and how well staffed the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) is, you may be able to breeze through security in five minutes – or it could take hours.
Recently, passengers at William P. Hobby Airport in Houston faced a 3.5-hour wait in the security line. A partial government shutdown has caused thousands of TSA employees to work without pay. Some have called in sick, leading to staff disruptions and unpredictability.
Rather than just showing up for any flight five hours early, or coming 90 minutes before and hoping things will work out, did you know you can check the current wait times? Just like you can check how long it will take to drive to work on your favorite GPS app?
The MyTSA app is the official app from the Transportation Security Administration. Travelers submit their own wait times, allowing the app to aggregate these reports and provide real-time estimates of how busy the TSA checkpoint is.
You can also use the app to see if security programs such as TSA PreCheck lanes are open and operational.
Another option: Many airports publish “real-time or near-real-time” estimates on their websites.
“These estimates are typically generated using a mix of real-time sensors, operational data, and historical trends. While they’re not always 100 percent accurate, they can offer a helpful snapshot of how crowded the security area is at a given moment.”
Finally, platforms such as FlightAware and Flightradar24 “don’t track security lines directly, but they show flight delays, airport congestion, and departure patterns,” which can give you an idea about potential disruptions.
