✈️ Delta Makes It Public: AI Dynamic Pricing Is Here
Adjusting prices for seasonal demand, and offering sales at certain high-leverage, industry-specific times is an extremely old concept.
However, price sensitivity to specific, real-time factors has been evolving fast. Uber’s (in)famous surge pricing is a recent example that ruffled quite a few feathers.
Airlines have occasionally played games with prices based on whether you’ve revisited the website multiple times or whether you’re a single flyer.
Like it or not, the newest evolution, this one involving artificial intelligence, is no longer on the horizon. It’s here.
By the end of this year, Delta Air Lines “plans for 20% of its ticket prices to be individually determined using AI,” Fortune wrote. The company already has run a pilot program on 3% of its fares, calling the results “amazingly favorable.” Delta also said it hopes to eventually do away with static pricing for good.
“We will have a price that’s available on that flight, on that time, to you, the individual,” Delta’s president said, comparing AI to “super analyst working 24 hours a day, seven days a week and trying to simulate… real time, what should the price points be?”
One critic of the move told Fortune this signifies the era of “fair” pricing is over.
