Women now hold more payroll jobs than men in the United States for the third time in history. This time it may stick.

The past flips happened during the Great Recession and again for an extremely brief period just before the COVID-19 pandemic.

As recently as the early 1990s, men held almost 7 million more jobs than women. (In 1964, when this dataset began, the gap was about 21 million.)

Recently, male employment has contracted (with transportation and manufacturing jobs on the decline) and female employment has held steady (with the health care and social assistance industries performing well). Women accounted for about two-thirds of the 1.2 million jobs added in the last two years.

Since 1948, male participation in the labor force has fallen about 20%.

The “back in my day” crowd has a case for some bragging rights: young men ages 21 to 30 have spent about 70% of their newfound free time playing video games or on recreational computer use.

Don’t expect the trend to reverse quickly like it did the two previous instances. This time, women may continue to outnumber men in the workplace.

“This seems to be more of a long-term decline that’s led to more of a permanent shift going forward, or at least semi-permanent,” one expert told Fortune.

More adult men live with their parents than women. The stigma of a stay-at-home dad, husband or boyfriend also isn’t as strong as it once was, one article suggests.
