🗺️ Why Year-Long Travelers Love South Dakota

Want to live life as a Rolling Stone? Does putting down roots really cramp your style? Are you like Clark and love to traverse the globe whenever possible?

No matter how much you travel, you likely need a state of residence to register your vehicle, to vote, for tax purposes and perhaps to receive mail.

With a little internet digging, you’re likely to choose South Dakota.

It’s a state with no income tax, affordable vehicle registration and, most importantly, a shockingly easy process to become a resident.

It will take you 48 hours or less. Just spend a single night at a campground or hotel. Then go to one of many businesses specializing in helping people become South Dakotans. Fill out some paperwork with them and you’re done.

“The people that have given up their sticks and bricks and now are on wheel estate, we call it, and they’re full-time traveling,” Dane Goetz, owner of one of those businesses, said. “They need a place to call home, and we provide that address for them to do that, and they are just perpetually on the move.”

The rule now has become controversial because in-state lawmakers aren’t sure people who don’t actually live there should vote there. And Connecticut, with its graduated income tax rate of 3.0% to 6.99%, in addition to cities and towns that collect property tax on vehicles, is investigating whether citizens are avoiding tax obligations via South Dakota “residency.”

At least for now, if you want to live the Rolling Stone lifestyle, South Dakota’s the state for you.
