🧍‍♂️ Spanish Man Skips Work For Six Years Before Getting Caught

In the iconic movie “Office Space,” Peter, the main character, decides he hates his job.

Instead of quitting, however, he declares he’s just not going to go anymore. (Perhaps quiet quitting isn’t so new.)

When Jennifer Anniston’s character wonders whether his company will fire him, he responds: “I don’t know but I really don’t like it and I’m not going to go.”

A quarter-century after that movie, a real-life Peter successfully pulled off that ruse for six years.

Joaquin Garcia from Spain worked as a building supervisor for a water treatment plant for decades. The 69-year-old stopped showing up for work but kept getting paid for six years without detection thanks to “the bureaucratic structure of local government where there was a miscommunication between two departments.”

His annual salary? The equivalent of about $47,500 in U.S. dollars. He got ordered to pay a fine equivalent to about $35,000 U.S. dollars. Garcia only got caught after getting nominated for an award for 20 years of service.

The deputy mayor was quoted as saying, “I called him up and asked him, ‘What did you do yesterday? The month before, the month before that?’ He didn’t know what to say.”
