Looking for a spouse in 2024? Buy a smartphone.

That number didnā€™t cross the 2% threshold until 1995 and didnā€™t pass any of the traditional methods until 2001. But in 2012, it topped ā€œvia friendsā€ as the No. 1 most common reason per a Stanford University dataset.

Meeting a spouse or romantic partner in high school, in college or in church has become much less common in recent years, while meeting as coworkers was more of a rarity when the data began in the 1930s. Meeting a romantic partner through your family also has fallen out of fashion.

Here are the most common ways to meet your other half in 2024.

Online: 61.2%
Via friends: 13.6%
As coworkers: 8.7%
In a bar: 4.8%
Via family: 4.4%
In school (not college): 3.3%
In church: 2.1%
As neighbors: 1.3%
In college: 0.7%
