🚘 Here’s How Much Car Ownership Costs Americans
Did you know car ownership can cost $3,000 more – or less – per year depending on where you live?
A new state-by-state comparison of car ownership costs in 2025 looked at insurance, gas, maintenance and sales tax. (Insurance accounts for more than half of total ownership costs in 13 of 50 states, in case you needed another reason to re-shop your car insurance.)
The U.S. average: $4,507 per year.
In the most expensive state, Nevada, residents shell out $6,119 per year excluding car payments. That’s more than $500 a month just for ownership costs, on average. Auto insurance accounts for 56% of those expenses.
New Hampshire drivers pay just $3,030, or little more than $250 per month.
In Louisiana ($5,663, third-most expensive) high sales taxes add about $400 per year to ownership costs.
