📈 Amazon Surpassing Walmart For No. 1 in Revenue
Walmart long has held the mantle for No. 1 when it comes to quarterly revenue among S&P 500 companies. It generated nearly $128 billion in the fourth quarter of 2012(!).
Amazon, by contrast, barely topped $21 billion that quarter. Yet, 12 years later, Amazon finally looks poised to surpass Walmart in quarterly revenue.
The e-commerce giant with the huge cloud storage business nearly reached $188 billion in revenue in the fourth quarter of 2024. Bloomberg analysts predict Walmart will announce ~$180 billion in revenue for the same quarter when it reports its earnings on Feb. 20.
Amazon seemingly closed the gap in fourth-quarter revenue a bit every year before really accelerating starting in 2020. Barring a strong revenue beat, it will finally take the crown.
That doesn’t mean that Amazon always is superior. For example, Clark regularly says he prefers a Walmart+ membership to Amazon Prime.
📊 Stat of the Day
📦️ 75%+: The share of U.S. adults that were Amazon Prime members in 2024. That’s 194 million people under the Prime umbrella. Amazon also revealed it delivered 9 billion items the same day or the next day in 2024.
