🇺🇲 U.S. States Ranked By Percentage of Overall GDP

The United States remains the largest economy in the world, growing to nearly $31 trillion in 2025.

Six states produced at least $1 trillion in gross domestic product last year.

The economy remains fairly diverse as well. Technology and entertainment rule in California. Energy, manufacturing, agriculture and defense beef up Texas.

Finance, pharmaceuticals, tourism and farming are among the other lucrative regional industries.

Here are the top five states by the percentage of U.S. GDP they represent:

1. California: 13.8%
2. Texas: 9.4%
3. New York: 8.0%
4. Florida: 6.0%
5. Illinois: 3.9%

Add Pennsylvania (3.4%), Ohio (3.1%) and Georgia (3.0%) and you’ve accounted for more than half the GDP of the United States with just eight states.

The bottom 13 states each produce less than half a percent of the U.S. GDP. Vermont, Wyoming and Alaska are 51st, 50th and 49th respectively with a 0.2% share (the list includes Washington D.C.).
