šŸ’µ Cheapest Online Retailers in the U.S.: Amazon vs. Walmart

Amazon remains king of best online prices but Walmart is closing the gap.

Thatā€™s according to the seventh-annual Price Wars study published by Profitero. The study compared the online prices of more than 14,000products from 19 major retailers across 15 different categories.

Amazon earned the title of lowest average prices, as it has in every year of the study. But Walmart is now just 4% more expensive overall. Walmart closed the gap in 10 of the 15 categories.

The average retailer is 16% more expensive than Amazon, putting Amazon and Walmart in a class of their own when it comes to low prices.

Some other interesting findings:

  • Amazonā€™s biggest lead across any category? Video games. The online retail giant is 9% less expensive on average than second-place Best Buy.

  • However, Walmart did gain a full 9% on Amazon in the video game category vs. one year prior.

  • Amazonā€™s smallest lead? Pet supplies. Chewy was just 1% more expensive ā€“ and offered identical prices to Amazon 93% of the time. Petco wasnā€™t far back at 2% more expensive.

  • CVS was 52% (!) more expensive than Amazon for health and personal care items. Walgreens was 42% more expensive.

  • Walmart and Amazon featured identical pricing 70% of the time. Target only matched Amazon 26% of the time.

Keep in mind these are for online prices only.
