🇬🇧 2 Interesting British Airline Developments

Two British airlines are leading some interesting new experiments that could eventually make their way to the United States.

First, British Airways just announced it will allow in-flight voice calls on aircraft with Starlink Wi-Fi. Yes, it’s now possible for passengers to make phone calls during flights – as long as they “keep [their] voice low and use headphones.”

In case you’re wondering, United Airlines, Hawaiian Airlines and Alaska Airlines all upgraded their Wi-Fi systems to Starlink, but have yet to allow voice calls.

“For travelers accustomed to flying within the USA, the idea of making a phone call at 30,000 feet may sound, literally, shocking,” AFAR reported.

“In-flight voice calls in domestic airspace are still effectively banned. The Federal Communications Commission prohibits traditional cellular voice calls onboard aircraft, a rule that dates back to concerns about interference with ground networks.”

In other news, Jet2 – a low-cost British airline that went viral on TikTok for its marketing jingle – wants to create a formal, national blacklist of unruly passengers.

A drunk couple on a flight from Antalya, Turkey, to London got diverted when they began fighting. They were also traveling with two children. A woman in her 60s got “punched by accident,” causing the pilot to make an unscheduled stop in Bulgaria.

Jet2 banned the passengers from its airline, but wants to go a step further: “We are lobbying for the creation of a national database so that as well as being banned from flying with us, disruptive passengers will also be banned from flying with other U.K. airlines.”
