āļø International Travel: How To Handle Paying in a Different Currency
Traveling internationally this summer (or at any point)? How exciting.
If youāre anything like Clark, you probably make your airfare and hotel reservations meticulously, scouring the internet for the best deal for hours, weeks or even months.
But if youāre not careful, you can give back some of the dollars you save there by making mistakes with how you pay for things once you arrive in another country.
AFAR recently published an article titled ā5 Mistakes to Avoid When Exchanging Money Abroad.ā The article echoed many of the items that Clark has espoused for years on his podcast.
Hereās a truncated version of the list:
1. Donāt use the airport currency kiosk to convert your money.
2. Donāt choose āpay in U.S. dollarsā when settling bills at restaurants and the like.
3. Find ATMs affiliated with major international banks.
4. Use credit cards that donāt charge international transaction fees (and banks that reimburse ATM charges).
5. Try to avoid exchanging too much or too little cash.
