Today's question

Dara in Indiana asks:
"I’m a full-time teacher with a side hustle selling thrifted items on eBay. Should I set up a separate checking account and debit card just for my eBay purchases and payouts? Also, do I need an LLC? My bank and accountant said neither is necessary, but I think having a separate account would help me track my money and stay motivated. What do you advise?"

Clark's answer: While you don't need to set up an LLC at this point, having a dedicated account and card for your eBay business is a really smart move. When you use one separate card for all your thrifting purchases, it gives you crystal clear records of your expenses. That makes simple accounting a breeze — you’ll know exactly what kind of net profit you’re making and which items are giving you a great return versus the ones that aren't. Is it strictly necessary? No, but is it highly desirable? Absolutely.

I also love the idea of having your eBay payouts sent directly into that separate account. When you spoke with your accountant and banker, they might not have envisioned this side hustle growing into something that generates real money — but who knows? It very well could! I recommend setting up a fee-free online bank account, linking a debit card to it for your thrifting trips, and keeping everything streamlined. Seeing that balance grow will be exciting, and keeping your personal and business money completely separate will save you plenty of headaches as your business expands.

Also, managing money was simple just a few decades ago: cash was king, consumer choices were limited, and savings accounts earned fixed interest rates. Today, we live in the most over-stored country in the world, surrounded by endless retail options, online shopping, and digital payment methods like Venmo and Cash App. Money has become frictionless and abstract, making it easier than ever for young people to fall into financial traps like recurring subscriptions and impulse spending. Because the modern financial world is vastly more complex, parents can no longer rely on kids picking up smart money habits by osmosis – active teaching while they are still under your roof is essential, as Clark explains.
