⚡ Ford Reveals New, Affordable EV Pickup Truck
The future of electric vehicles looks more practical. That is, if Ford’s most recent bet is any indication.
The automaker just announced Fathom, a midsize pickup with an MSRP starting at $28,350. That makes it one of the cheapest EVs in America. (That price point includes a standard-range battery and excludes a $1,595 destination and delivery charge.)
Ford’s previous iterations of EVs, including the Mustang Mach-E and the F-150 Lightning pickup, led to write-offs of $19.5 billion. Customer demand turned out lighter than expected for those models.
Preorders open early in 2027 with the first deliveries expected later in the year.
The average new electric vehicle costs $56,238 according to Cox Automotive. So Ford is betting that profitability and affordability go hand in hand for the automaker.
The hybrid Ford Maverick is the top American hybrid truck. Now Ford is making a play for the EV pickup truck category.
Ford says the vehicle will be “BlueCruise-capable,” which is the company’s hands-free driving assistant. Apple Maps will get embedded in its touchscreen. And Ford says the vehicle will offer more passenger space than a Toyota RAV4.
Slate also introduced the “Blank” in June, a two-door EV pickup with an MSRP starting at $24,950. So there’s now competition in that price range.
