👩 More Women Are Working Than Ever

The percentage of women ages 25 to 54 participating in the workforce rose to an all-time high of 78.1% in May. The number now stands at 77.9% as women hold a record 79 million jobs.

Just 42% of women in this age bracket held jobs in 1960 and just 75.8% held jobs in 2019.

According to Wall Street Journal reporting, more women are starting businesses or getting jobs in male-dominated industries. “But the biggest change is the lasting impact of the pandemic’s remote work policies across companies and industries.”

A record 68.9% of women with children under 6 years old were working in 2023. But according to a Pew Research Center survey, in opposite-sex marriages where both husband and wife make similar income, wives worked an average of 4.5 extra hours per week on housework and caregiving.

Still, as the WSJ pointed out, one way to combat an aging U.S. population is to get a larger percentage of working-age people into the labor market. At least when it comes to women in the workplace, that seems to be happening.

In 1960, 97.1% of men ages 25 to 54 were working. That’s fallen to 89.6%as of now but has stayed mostly flat since the mid-200s.
