“Gift cards are a good idea for everybody but the person who receives them,” the subhead in the story says.
Clark is surely nodding in agreement.
Gift cards are often big targets for scammers. People often don’t use gift card balances. There’s risk of the restaurant or retailer going out of business.
Plus, what’s wrong with cash? That way, the recipient can determine for themselves how to spend the gifted money. (In Clark’s parlance, gift cards take money that can be used anywhere and turn it into “fake” money that can only be used in one place.)
He’s been consistent in his holiday advice to avoid gift cards for co-workers, family and friends. Clark will only buy a gift card if you get bonus money on the card (pay $40 for a $50 gift card, as an example).
Getting presents for loved ones during the holidays is quite personal. You get to decide. Just know that Clark sees a lot of issues and headaches around gift cards and doesn’t recommend them.
