💵 Clark Explains How To Protect Your Identity in the Modern Era
All our identities are at risk on the internet. And the consequences of a cybercriminal grabbing our key information are higher than ever.
Fortunately, there are a few things you can do.
“Be very, very wary anytime you give your Social Security number to anybody,” Clark says on the March 2 podcast. “Social Security numbers have become the de facto national identity system. And it’s why they’re so central to what identity thieves do.”
And if you’re old-school and still lug around a checkbook, it’s time to reconsider. In a rare case you can even get arrested because someone stole your checks and wrote bad checks, Clark says.
“Do not carry a checkbook. This is as serious as a heart attack,” Clark says. “You do not carry a checkbook. Checkbooks are like the biggest nightmare of identity theft there is.”
Here are seven other ways to protect your identity:
Don’t carry your Social Security card on your person.
Pay bills directly at the website of who you’re paying online.
Try one-time-use virtual credit card numbers when you shop online.
Use Apple and G-Pay for transactions when you’re out and about.
