🛎️ Japan: Home of the Tiniest Hotel “Rooms”

Clark often calls himself cheap with a certain sense of pride. Whether it’s drying a disposable razor so it lasts for one year or buying a closet full of clearance shirts for single-digit dollars, he loves scoring a deal.

But perhaps there’s no area in which Clark is better at saving money than travel.

Once, in Japan, he stayed in a micro hotel room that was less than 70 square feet.

“It was only $40 a night in Kyoto at a time that Japan was more expensive,” Clark says.

“The bathroom, if you could call it that, was the same size as one of those micro toilet rooms on an airplane. It had this little thing you wash yourself with that was on top of the toilet. The sink was on top of the toilet. I mean, it was really, really austere.”

Japan is the only place he’s ever run out of money on a trip – 40 years ago when you needed physical yen and couldn’t pay via credit card.

But Clark hasn’t ventured into a capsule hotel in Japan. Started in the 1970s as a way for businessmen to rest after drinking, they now have become a curiosity for travel writers.

“My capsule looked like a cryosleep chamber on a space flight,” one of them wrote after spending just $26 for a night in Tokyo.

Here are more tips from Clark on saving money on a trip to Japan.
