🥡 Food Delivery and Americans: How Often Do We Indulge?
Food delivery is convenient, but it’s expensive. Make it a habit, and your food budget can take a hit fast.
So how often are Americans actually ordering in? And who’s doing it most?
A recent YouGov survey offers some insight.
Cooking Habits
Most Americans are still cooking regularly:
76% cook at least a few times per week
60% eat leftovers multiple times weekly
42% eat food cooked by another household member multiple times per week
10% cook once a month or less
2% never cook
Women are more likely than men to cook daily (40% vs. 31%). And people living with a spouse cook far more often than those living with parents (43% vs. 23%).
Takeout and Delivery Trends
While cooking dominates, takeout and delivery remain common:
34% get takeout at least weekly
17% have food delivered at least once per week
13% never get takeout
48% never get food delivered
Age plays a big role. Among adults 45+, 89% get food delivered once a month or less, compared with 70% of those ages 18–44.
Young adults are also heavier users of meal kits and shared meals:
21% of 18–44-year-olds eat meal kits weekly
65% eat food cooked by another household member weekly (vs. 45% of those 45+)
The most frequent delivery users? Adults 18–44 living in cities with household incomes of more than $100,000 — 68% order delivery weekly, the highest of any demographic group surveyed.
The Big Picture
Despite the rise of delivery apps, most Americans still believe home cooking wins:
88% say home-cooked meals are healthier
88% say home-cooked meals provide better value
74% say home-cooked meals taste better
Convenience may be tempting, but most people still recognize the value — financially and nutritionally — of cooking at home.
