💵 How Americans Feel About ‘Tipflation’
Tired of iPads everywhere asking you for tips? Or, worse yet, suggesting super high tip percentages at places you’d have never dreamed of tipping a decade ago?
You’re not alone. “Tipflation” is real, according to the Pew Research Center. Nearly three-quarters of Americans surveyed (72%) say expectations of tipping have spread to more places in the last five years.
You know those restaurants that force automatic service charges for groups of a certain size? Well, 72% of Americans oppose that. And nearly twice as many oppose businesses suggesting tip amounts to customers (40%) as those that support it (24%).
As much as tipping can seem like an affront, most of us just want to know what to do. The Pew survey says just 34% of us feel it’s extremely easy to know whether to tip and 33% feel it’s extremely easy to know how much to tip.
Tipping seems to be about quality of service more than anything else, 77% of Americans say.
Here are the most common times that Americans will tip:
Sit-down restaurant (92%)
Haircut (78%)
Food delivery (76%)
Buying a drink at a bar (70%)
