🚘️ The Future of Online Car-Buying Is … Amazon
Clark has railed against the old-school car dealership buying experience for years.
Auto sales is big business, though. And laws protect dealerships.
Sure, “no-haggle” companies such as CarMax and Carvana exist. But COVID-19 brought excitement around vehicles as an e-commerce product with little in the way of results.
Can Amazon popularize online vehicle purchasing? An interesting Forbes article explains why online car sales hasn’t caught on among dealerships. And why “many industry observers think … Amazon will soon dominate online car selling.”
Amazon just announced a partnership with Hyundai. Customers can skip going to a dealership and complete the buying process online.
Pesky dealership laws likely will preclude Amazon and Hyundai from offering transparent pricing and from removing dealerships who aren’t performing from the program.
Forbes speculates that offline Hyundai dealerships will offer more competitive prices. But that after a decade researching and looking for an entry point into the U.S. automotive market, this is a signal that Amazon is prepared to steam ahead.
“If Amazon goes direct to dealers like Cars.com, it will remove the constraints of a manufacturer partnership and create the potential to become the number one third-party platform for buying a car online,” writes Jeremy Alicandri, author of the Forbes article.
