What was the median age for a renter in the United States in 2024?
If you answered 42 years old, congratulations. Youāre correct.
Surprised? We donāt blame you. The median renterās age in 2021, just three years earlier, was 33. So in three years, the median age has gone up by nine.
Rent for single-family homes has jumped 41% higher than pre-pandemic levels, averaging $2,174 in December 2024. Multifamily units are +26% in the same period and averaged $1,812.
Fortune summed up the phenomenon with this subheading after listing that data from Zillow:
Higher home prices mean bigger down payments ā and older renters
Mortgage rates also jumped from 2.65% in January 2021 to near 7% at the moment (and a peak of 7.63% in October 2023).
Thereās also not enough supply of single-family homes to meet demand.
