💵 Streaming: What To Expect in 2024

Deadline.com, focused on the Hollywood and entertainment businesses, wrote a State of the Union of sorts for the streaming business entering 2024.

Among the notable observations and predictions:

  • Profitability has become “the new North Star” for streaming businesses after years of competing for market share.

  • Netflix and Disney created ad-supported tiers at the end of 2022, launching a huge trend. Prime Video will follow suit in 2024. Apple TV+ is rumored to join the bandwagon.

  • Bundling is becoming a viable option for many streaming platforms. CNBC called 2024 “the year of the streaming bundle.”

  • More on bundling from Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav: “If we don’t do it to ourselves, I think it will be done to us. It will be Amazon who does it, or Apple who does it, or Roku who does it. They’ve already started.”

  • The top Reddit comment on the Deadline.com story with over 800 upvotes: “Our family rotates between one service every 3 months.” Another user stated there aren’t many quality shows on any streaming service. So they binge what they want and then rotate.

  • The Writers Guild of America strike in 2023 impacted production of new content. It even impacted Netflix despite its treasure trove of cash.

  • It will take some time for productions to start moving through the pipes again. That gives credence to the idea of rotating between services.
