♟️ The Business of Chess Is Booming

The Netflix show “The Queen’s Gambit” (October 2020) and the COVID-19 pandemic added jet fuel to online chess.

But Chess.com has been on a wild trajectory even without those factors. The founders bought the domain for more than $50,000 in 2005, subverting their original plan to provide a forum when gameplay proved mind-blowingly popular.

According to Similarweb data as researched by Sherwood News, Chess.com got 188 million visits in April 2024. That’s up ~300% from April 2019. Not a bad five-year growth rate.

About 35 million chess games a day take place on Chess.com . The site reportedly does more than $100 million in annual revenue from its 150 million members via a freemium model. And Sherwood speculates that revenue figure could be conservative.

As a game, it’s certainly no longer limited to “nerds” and geniuses.
