✨ Starlink Becoming More and More Prominent for In-Flight Wi-Fi
American Airlines just became the latest major airline to offer passengers in-flight Wi-Fi via Starlink.
It will install SpaceX’s Starlink on more than 500 narrow-body planes, joining United Airlines, Southwest, Alaska Airlines and Hawaiian Airlines among U.S. carriers.
Traditional airplane Wi-Fi often relies on older geostationary satellites that are more than 20,000 miles above earth. Starlink uses thousands of LEOs (low earth orbit satellites) only a few hundred miles up.
The shorter distance dramatically reduces latency (delay) and can increase speeds.
Airlines install a Starlink antenna on top of their aircraft. And the antenna continuously switches between Starlink satellites as the flight takes place. The result: internet performance that’s often much closer to what you’d expect at home.
If you like to work on your flight, or even stream movies by tapping into the in-flight Wi-Fi with no interruptions, things are looking up for you.
