❄️ Travel Alert: Major Disruptions Expected as Winter Storm Fern Sweeps the East
If you plan to fly this weekend, expect possible delays or cancellations as powerful Winter Storm Fern moves across the East. Airports in the Plains, Southeast and Mid-Atlantic are expected to be most affected before the storm pushes northeast. Knowing your rights ahead of time can help turn a stressful situation into a manageable one.
When a flight is canceled due to weather, airlines are not required to provide meals, hotel accommodations or compensation.
However, if a cancellation or long delay is caused by issues within the airline’s control, you can generally expect meal vouchers and hotel accommodations for overnight delays lasting more than three hours. Airlines will typically rebook you on the same carrier or a partner airline.
If you decide not to travel after an airline cancels your flight, federal law requires a full refund — regardless of ticket type.
The Department of Transportation’s Airline Customer Service Dashboard is a useful resource for understanding your rights and airline-specific policies.
Even when compensation isn’t required, airline staff may offer vouchers, mileage credits or other goodwill gestures on a case-by-case basis. Staying calm and respectful with gate and airline personnel can go a long way.
Trip tip: Pack medications, eyeglasses and other essentials in your carry-on — not checked luggage. Bring snacks, device chargers and anything you’d need if you’re stuck without your checked bag.
