🏀 Streaming Platforms Are the Future of Sports Broadcasting
In the grand scheme of sports broadcasting rights, it’s a drop in the bucket. But it’s the latest shift from traditional TV and cable channels to streaming within the world of sports.
It’s part of a major transition. Virtually every major streamer is now buying slices of live sports rights. Even blue-blood college programs are experimenting with direct-to-streaming distribution.
Some of the major sports rights deals already held by streamers:
Amazon holds exclusive rights to the NFL’s Thursday Night Football package.
Netflix enjoys a multi-year deal to broadcast the NFL’s Christmas Day games.
The NBA’s new $77 billion rights deal includes Amazon (approximately 66 regular-season games, plus some NBA Playoffs inventory and the NBA Cup). The NBA arguably is the first major league to fully integrate streaming as a co-equal partner to TV.
NBCUniversal (Peacock) and Disney (ESPN), part of the new NBA rights agreement, also include major streaming components.
MLB’s current rights include Netflix (Opening day, Home Run Derby, Field of Dreams game), Apple/Apple TV (Friday Night Baseball) and NBCUniversal/Peacock (Sunday games and some playoff games).
All Major League Soccer (MLS) games appear on Apple TV. Apple TV is also now the exclusive broadcaster of Formula 1 in the United States.
The tough angle for sports fans is that broadcast rights are increasingly fragmented. That often means paying for multiple streaming services to access all the games and events you want to watch.
Team Clark stays on top of ways to help save you money, including:
But tech companies are willing to pay premium prices, and sports leagues want continued revenue growth (in addition to younger, global audiences).
Still, there’s room for a lot more transition. For example, about 87% of NFL games still air on broadcast TV. The Super Bowl and the NBA Finals show that most big events still air on legacy networks.

It’s time for "Clark Stinks!" Christa reads the latest "Clark Stinks!" submissions and Clark responds. Also, while home security cameras have revolutionized public safety and led to a massive reduction in burglaries, Clark warns that we are reaching a tipping point where these helpful tools can cross the line into a serious invasion of privacy. The "rules of engagement" for our data are becoming dangerously blurred. It is time to demand clear state and local laws that delineate how this data is stored and shared, especially when private businesses are involved. If you feel that surveillance in your community has gone too far, it is time to get active, talk to your local officials, and ensure that a "good thing" for crime prevention doesn't become a "bad thing" for your fundamental right to privacy.
