✈ Airlines Already Planning To Fill Void Spirit Airlines Left Behind
Spirit Airlines may be dead. But other airlines are stepping into the void to fill gaps in demand.
“Turns out a lot of them were already eyeing those same airports anyway,” The Navigator reported. “Spirit’s collapse just gave them the perfect excuse to move faster.
“Some carriers are even capping prices and throwing rescue fares to passengers who got left hanging.”
To wit:
Two days after Spirit Airlines ceased operations, Southwest Airlines announced expansions in Las Vegas (10 additional routes and 15 pre-existing routes with increased capacity) and Orlando (expanded service on 23 routes and 200+ daily departures) by sometime in 2027.
JetBlue is adding 11 new destinations from Fort Lauderdale, Spirit’s home airport. JetBlue is also offering a status match to former Spirit customers.
Breeze Airways is adding four nonstop routes out of Atlantic City by the end of the year, all of which Spirit used to operate.
“Frontier is the one to watch,” The Navigator reported. “They’re Spirit’s closest budget rival and have already been creeping into the same markets. No big announcement yet, but don’t be surprised when one comes.”
📊 Stat of the Day
💸 4.26%: The new I-bond rate (for May 1, 2026, through Oct. 31, 2026). It includes a fixed rate of 0.90%. Although it’s not as good as it was in late 2022, Kiplinger calls it “mildly attractive.” It’s a notch better than our favorite high-yield savings accounts at the moment.
