🚘️ Tesla Experiments With Renting Cars Directly

Now that the federal government’s $7,500 tax subsidy on electric vehicles has ended, Tesla is doing its best to pivot.

In addition to putting out models with fewer features at cheaper prices, the company is racing toward a future where it offers much more than just vehicles (hello, crime-fighting robots!). It’s also offering Elon Musk a $1 trillion compensation package for hitting some pie-in-the-sky metrics in the future.

In the meantime, Tesla is renting its vehicles from select dealerships in Southern California, possibly as a sort of test balloon.

You can rent the vehicles for up to one week, starting at $60 a day. It includes free Supercharging and full self-driving as well as a $250 Tesla credit.

Who knows if the Tesla rental experience will expand, and if it’ll be plagued by the same issues that have hit the general rental car market (like A.I. scanners sticking customers with huge bills for minuscule scratches or pre-existing damage).

Here’s to hoping that if Tesla does expand the program, the added rental car competition gives consumers more choice and incentivizes companies to be better.
