đłď¸ Is Chasing Credit Card Bonuses Worth It?
Matthew Palm, a 57-year-old TV producer from Illinois, has netted more than $40,000 through chasing credit card welcome bonuses.
âHe opens only cards that come with a sign-up bonus: a reward of a few hundred dollars in points for new customers who reach a modest spending target,â the New York Times article about Palm and other credit card rewards chasers detailed.
Considered âchurnersâ â credit card users who open cards, achieve the sign-up bonus and then churn out of the card â often donât earn nearly as much as Palm. But he and his wife have opened 50+ credit cards in the last seven years. (Reward: Roughly $6,000 per year.)
This type of activity is like playing with fire if youâre not extremely careful.
If you donât pay off your credit card statements every month, religiously, forget about it.
And you need to keep in mind the major factors that contribute to your credit score, including paying on time every month (even if youâre juggling many cards), having a low available credit to utilization ratio, your payment history and the average age of your lines of credit.
Youâve also got to be meticulous about following the rules for a credit card welcome bonus and making sure you arenât missing out on typical 2% cash back rewards cards chasing a bonus you arenât going to get or spending on a card once youâve already achieved a bonus.
But for the right (super detail-oriented, great with bills) person, it could be worth considering as a side hustle.
