🛍️ Uber’s Subscription Service Under FTC Scrutiny For Making It Hard To Cancel
Have you ever decided to cancel a subscription, only to have to fight a “retention expert” or navigate a labyrinth of automated phone instructions or online box-ticking exercises?
The experience can be as frustrating as any. And it doesn’t seem fair. Especially when it’s so easy to subscribe.
Now, these companies are running into some resistance. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission is investigating Uber over its Uber One subscription service.
The service offers discounts on Uber rides and Uber Eats deliveries. But the enrollment and cancelation terms may violate consumer protection laws.
About 25 million people subscribe to Uber One. Google search volume for “how to cancel Uber One” has more than doubled since the start of 2024.
The FTC finalized a law in October aiming to make canceling as easy as subscribing (the “click-to-cancel” rule).
