🚨 Booking.com Customers Need To Act ASAP
Unfortunately, Booking.com is the latest online company to succumb to hackers.
Customer data, including names, emails, phone numbers, addresses and booking details have been leaked. Basically, almost any information you’ve provided if you’ve booked through the website in the past is at risk. (Booking.com told The Guardian that financial information was not accessed.)
Worse, there are known instances of scammers messaging people on WhatsApp using the stolen info to pose as legitimate in an attempt to carry out phishing attacks. “That suggests hackers are leveraging the stolen information to target Booking.com customers,” TechCrunch reported.
This is exactly the kind of tactic we’re seeing more often in travel-related scams — where criminals use real booking details to make their messages look convincing. (You can learn more about how these schemes work — and how to avoid them — in our guide to avoiding vacation scams.)
Booking.com got fined in 2018 for reporting a previous hacking event to regulators more than three weeks after the legally mandated deadline.
If you’ve made reservations through Booking.com or have an account, it’s a good idea to change your password and consider two-factor authentication.
Be suspicious of any message you get requesting additional information for a booking you’ve made via text, WhatsApp or other forms of communication.
