✈️ Consumers Take a Loss on Flight Cancelation Compensation Rules

If you listen to every Clark podcast episode, you heard him applaud a rule finalized near the end of 2023 that would’ve required U.S. airlines to offer certain minimum compensation for canceled or delayed flights within their control.

The rule, which brought the U.S. more in line with Europe and Canada, would’ve required airlines pay $200 to $775 in cash, plus cover meals and hotel rooms, if flights got delayed or canceled due to things like:

  • Mechanical issues

  • Staff shortages

  • System outages

Sadly, on Nov. 14, the Department of Transportation withdrew the cash compensation rule, saying it would result in “unnecessary regulatory burdens.” The DOT instead will let airlines “compete on the services and compensation that they provide passengers.”

Now, the law requires refunds for canceled flights. But customers may need to be proactive in contacting the airline for reimbursement.

Outside of that, airlines get to decide for themselves on any potential compensation. That places a renewed emphasis on third-party travel protections, such as from credit card companies.
