🛒 Costco’s Checkout Experience Could Get Much Faster Soon

Costco has been running a pilot test for “automated pay stations” that take less than 10 seconds, saying customers have loved the speed and improved traffic flow.

As many great things as Costco memberships offer, go at the wrong time — say, a Sunday afternoon — and the checkout lines can be very long.

Costco “is pivoting from its traditional checkout roots to a high-tech pre-scan model and automated pay stations,” Fox Business reported.

These “automated” stations allow members to pay for pre-scan orders with an average transaction time of about eight seconds.

It’s unclear if or when Costco will roll out these stations to all of its stores. But considering Costco mentioned them on its latest earnings call, and customer feedback apparently has been quite positive, it seems like a real possibility.

Fox Business mentioned that Costco previously tested self-checkout at select stores, but that the system did not gain traction.
