🍟 McDonald’s Brings Back Monopoly Game With Scandalous History
Whether you stopped by the Golden Arches or you’ve seen the ubiquitous commercials, you may have heard that the popular McDonald’s Monopoly sweepstakes is back.
Exploding in popularity in the 1990s, the game ran continuously from 1987 to 2016. But unlike the McRib, which seems to always come back, the peel-to-play promotion vanished for the last nine years.
Why is that?
Well, former police officer Jerome “Jerry” Jacobson rigged the game for 12 years. Jacobson stole valuable pieces by guiding them to people he knew and sharing in the riches, diverting more than $24 million in prizes from the public. He roped more than 50 people into his scheme.
The FBI eventually got involved. Yikes!
It didn’t directly end the promotion, as Jacobson was sentenced in 2003 to 37 months in prison and more than $12.5 million in restitution.
McDonald’s has added safeguards this time around to prevent such an incident. It has also tied the contest into its digital app.
Here’s how to play, including which McDonald’s items come with physical or digital game pieces. The contest ends Nov. 2.
Clark is a big fan of fast food apps due to the consistent deals and savings they offer in hopes of generating loyalty.
