📺️ Ad Creep Shows Up Everywhere
Spaces free of advertising slowly are evaporating.
They’re in rideshares like Uber. They’re gaining popularity in streaming services as a cheaper subscription tier. And now they’re infiltrating one of the world’s largest social messaging apps.
WhatsApp, a real-time multimedia messaging service owned by Meta (previously called Facebook), boasts more than 2 billion monthly active users. That’s roughly the same number as Instagram.
Meta bought WhatsApp for $19 billion in 2014. Despite making $716 billion from ad revenue since 2019, Meta has yet to inject advertisements into WhatsApp – until now.
For now, ads will inhabit the “updates” tab, which is where WhatsApp users share text, photos, voice notes or video messages similar to Instagram’s Stories.
Meta, which has a history of making billions on its user’s data, “says it will tailor the ads to your interest by using ‘limited’ information, including your country or city, language, the channels you follow, and how you interact with ads on the platform.”
